How to play 9 Card Golf

You tend a small grid of mostly face-down cards and try to drive its total as low as you can, while everyone else does the same.

Flip two

Every round starts with your cards face down. Turn two of them over and you are off.

Draw or take

Take the unknown top card of the deck, or the known card sitting on the discard pile.

Swap or scrap

Slot it into your grid and the card it replaces flips face-up onto the discard — or throw it away.

Cancel to zero

Line up matching cards and that line scores nothing at all — however big the cards were.

A board for every mood

Same simple goal every time — just pick the size that fits the moment. Each board cancels cards its own way, so read the rule before you go hunting for matches.

4-card

EXCEED 50

Quick and friendly — a full round in about two minutes. Perfect for a coffee break or a very first game.

Cancel rule. A pair of the same rank in a row or a column scores zero.

6-card

EXCEED 70

The traditional Golf so many of us grew up on around the kitchen table, with room to scheme.

Cancel rule. Two rows of three. A pair of the same rank stacked one above the other scores zero — matches across a row of three do not.

9-card

EXCEED 100

The deep, strategic one. Cancelling is rarer, so every hidden card is a gamble worth taking.

Cancel rule. Three of a kind filling a whole row or column makes that line score zero.

All three boards are available against the computer and in pass-and-play. Online games are 9-card.

Frequently asked questions

Is 9 Card Golf free?

Yes — free to download and play. Every board size, both looks, and both card backs are included.

Does it work offline?

Playing the computer and pass-and-play both work with no connection at all. Online games, world rankings, and account features need internet.

Do I need an account?

Not to play the computer or pass and play — open the app and deal. A free account is only needed for online games and the world rankings.

Is online play live?

It is turn-by-turn and untimed rather than live. Take your turn whenever suits you and we will notify you when it is your move again. Online games are 9-card.

Ace is 1, cards 2 through 10 are face value, Jack is −2, Queen is 10, and King is 0. The same on every board.

Which board should I start with?

4-card if you have never played, 6-card if you grew up on Golf, and 9-card once you want the long game.
